Working within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics,this paper investigates the phenomenon of explicitation in English translations of the Confucian Lun Yu (the Analects) by looking at how ,in terms of Transitivity,the Process,the Participant(s) and Circumstance(s) are made explicit in the translated text. It is found that three ways of explicitation are frequently used in the translation: addition,explanation and reconstruction.
