EARLY REFLECTIONS ON THE PROBLEMS OF MODERNITY FROM MONTAIGNE (Institute of Foreign Literature, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing 100732, China) Abstract: Renaissance was the first big turning point in the history of Western Europe. Facing the sudden instability and the uncertainty of the future brought by various contradictions and disputes of the period of social transformation, Michel de Montaigne, the outstanding representative of the Second Renaissance, gave original consideration and perspective cognition on the problems of modernity, and he tried to find a solution to his internal labyrinth by dint of the ancient Greek culture. What is his contemplation and attitude distinctive about the ancient thoughts and doctrines? The relation reconstructed between the ancient Western tradition and him is it intimate or alienated? This text is going to analyze these questions through Montaigne’s Essais to improve our knowledge of European modernity on its origin.
